Breathing New Life (and New Purpose) Into Our 100 Year Old Building DID YOU KNOW:the Museum's site, the 1928 Art Deco-style building known as the Playland Bathhouse, was originally built as the changing rooms for Rye Beach? It was illegal to be seen walking around in a bathing suit other than on the beach, so beachgoers went into the Bathhouse, changed, then walked through a (now closed) underground tunnel directly onto Rye Beach. The Bathhouses went unused and unoccupied for nearly 50 years until the Westchester Children's Museum took over the North Bathhouse in 2016 to open the sunny, 6,000 sq. ft. Hoch Laager Boardwalk Galleries. We are now at work rejuvenating, renovating, and repurposing the remaining 16,000 sq ft for new galleries, offices, restrooms, gift shop and a spacious multi-use room for programs and birthday parties. Keep an eye out on oursocial mediaandwebsitefor updates about the opening scheduled for the Fall.

Les Footballeurs (1993), Niki de St. Phalle (our August featured artist), The Olympic Museum, Lausanne
Niki de St. Phalle was a French-American sculptor, painter, and filmmaker. Widely noted as one of the few female monumental sculptors, de Saint Phalle was also known for her social commitment and work. Her Art evolved into Nanas, light-hearted, whimsical, colorful, large-scale sculptures of animals, monsters, and female figures. One critic said: "The French-born, American-raised artist is one of the most significant female and feminist artists of the 20th century".
